Penn State Nittany Lions
Penn State won nine of their first 20 outings this year, beating Delaware State, Lehigh, St. Francis PA, Morehead State, Ohio State Le Moyne, Rider, Michigan and Wisconsin along the way. The Nittany Lions have since won three straight over Rutgers, Indiana and Iowa.
In the Iowa matchup back on Thursday, the Nittany Lions posted a 42-34 edge in the first half. Penn State kept the Hawkeyes at bay on a 47-45 run from there and took the victory 89-79. Tops in scoring was Ace Baldwin with 22 points, six assists and four steals in 37 minutes of work.
The Wildcats posted a pretty solid 13-5 run over their first 18 games, losing to only Mississippi State, Chicago State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Northwestern is 3-2 since then with wins over Illinois, Ohio State and Nebraska alongside losses to Purdue and Minnesota.
Matched up against Nebraska on Wednesday, the Wildcats stormed out to a 47-31 halftime edge. Northwestern was outscored 37-33 in the second half but held on for the win 80-68. Boo Buie was the leading team scorer with his 22 points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals.
ANDREW’S FREE PENN STATE VS NORTHWESTERN PREDICTION
I’ll stay with Northwestern. The Wildcats played pretty well overall in their latest win over Nebraska, hitting 44 percent from outside (11-of-25) with a 36-29 rebounding edge and 26 points off 17 Cornhuskers turnovers. The 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) from the line could have been better, but overall it was a solid (and much-needed) win after a pair of defeats.
Northwestern took a 76-72 road victory the last time these teams met up back on January 10. The Wildcats shot a blistering 61.4 percent from the field in that one, which helped offset 18 turnovers and a 30-25 rebounding deficit (9-2 offensive). This rematch is probably going to be quite competitive as well, and with the home push I like the Wildcats to pull off the cover.
