Syracuse Orange
The Orange scored quite well in their first three games of the year, taking wins in each. Syracuse took out New Hampshire 83-72 in their opener, then beat Canisius 89-77 in game two. In the Colgate matchup, the Orange had their closest victory thus far, getting out-rebounded 46-34 and shooting 40.3 percent from the floor in a 79-75 result.
In their Monday matchup versus Tennessee, Syracuse was a bit overmatched. The Orange stayed within five points in the first half but eventually lost 73-56. Chris Bell led the team in scoring with 16 points and one rebound. Judah Mintz added 15 points with three rebounds as well.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Over on the Bulldogs’ side, they got a bit of a late start but still won their first two games 86-71 over Yale and 123-57 versus Eastern Oregon. Gonzaga rolled in that blowout win, shooting a mind-boggling 63.4 percent from the field with a 66-33 rebounding advantage.
On Monday versus Purdue, Gonzaga had their hands full. The Bulldogs started out great and went into the locker room with a 35-30 edge, but were outscored 43-28 from there in a 76-63 defeat. Graham Ike led the team on 14 points with seven rebounds. Both Ryan Nembhard (six assists) and Nolan Hickman had 11 points apiece.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll stay with Gonzaga. Both teams are coming off difficult losses to tough squads, but the Bulldogs should be in control here if they play well. Gonzaga didn’t shoot very well versus Purdue, hitting 37.7 percent from the field and just 18.8 percent (6-of-32) from 3-point range. The rebounding was pretty solid overall, though: 38 total and 13 offensive.
As for Syracuse, they got hit on the boards pretty bad by Tennessee, losing the rebounding battle 48-33. The Orange didn’t shoot great either, with 35 percent from the field. All things being equal, Gonzaga should be able to cover on Tuesday. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Orange follow along for a while, though.
