Fresno State Bulldogs
The Bulldogs opened up the year with a pretty routine matchup versus Fresno Pacific. Fresno State took a win in that one 77-66. Game two was the Bulldogs’ first loss, 79-69 versus Kent State. After scoring just 22 points in the first half versus the Flashes, Fresno State ended up shooting 60 percent from the field with 22 turnovers in the defeat.
The Bulldogs were able to get back into the win column in their latest matchup versus Morgan State. Fresno State built up a 43-26 edge in the first half and cruised to the 87-68 result. Leading the team in scoring was Donavan Yap with 23 points and four rebounds. Isaiah Hill added 17 points with seven assists and five boards.
New Mexico State Aggies
Over on the Aggies’ side, they alternated wins with losses over their first four games this year. New Mexico State took a blowout loss to Kentucky 86-46 in their opener and fell to UC Irvine 91-74 in game three. Otherwise the wins were over Sul Ross State 84-49 and Western New Mexico 78-43.
New Mexico State managed to buck that trend in a consecutive victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday. The Aggies were down 40-28 at the break, then rallied for a 76-71 win with 48 second-half points. New Mexico State’s Christian Cook led the way on 26 points, while Femi Odukale put up 18 points with eight boards.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll stick with the Aggies. New Mexico State has got to put up a better effort than they did in their last game versus Northern Colorado, though. The Aggies shot a tepid 38.9 percent from the field with 25-of-34 (73.5 percent) from the line and 14 turnovers. The team does get credit for the big second-half comeback, but that probably won’t work versus Fresno State.
As for the Bulldogs, they’re coming off a nice effort versus Morgan State with 53.8 percent shooting, 46 rebounds and 14 team assists. Fresno State should match up pretty well in this one, and we’ll have an entertaining game if both teams play well. I like the Aggies to power out a cover, though.
