The Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles and the Bucknell Bison meet Monday in college basketball action from Sojka Pavilion. Southern Indiana is 1-4 on the year so far. The Eagles lost a close one to La Salle in their latest outing. As for Bucknell, they’re 1-4 as well and coming off a loss to Duke. Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles
Southern Indiana opened the year with three straight losses: 75-63 to Saint Louis, 74-51 to Michigan State and 78-67 versus Chicago State. The Screaming Eagles finally got their first win last Tuesday versus Tiffin 68-65, shooting 45.8 percent from the field and going 10-of-11 from the line in a comeback victory.
The Screaming Eagles took another loss in their last matchup versus La Salle, but they were at least competitive. Southern Indiana held a 36-31 edge at the break, but then got outscored 48-42 from there in a 79-78 loss. Tops in scoring was AJ Smith with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Bucknell Bison
Over on the Bison’s side, they fell to Delaware 78-57 and Penn 80-61 in their first two outings this year. Bucknell powered out a win over Niagara on November 11 though, taking it 73-64 on the strength of a 36-16 rebounding advantage. The Bison couldn’t keep it going though, and lost to La Salle 69-57 in the next game.
Bucknell had an unenviable matchup versus Duke in their last game back on Friday. The Bison were down 44-29 by halftime and didn’t get any closer in an eventual loss 90-60. Bucknell’s Jack Forrest led the team on 17 points and four rebounds.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably stay with Bucknell. There’s not a ton of intrigue involved in this game, but we should still have a fairly competitive matchup. The Bison (understandably) couldn’t do much against Duke in their last outing, shooting 37 percent from the field and getting out-rebounded 46-27. Bucknell hasn’t been too bad in more comparable games so far this year, though.
As for Southern Indiana, they shot a nice 53.3 percent from the floor versus La Salle and edged them out on the boards 32-29. The Eagles couldn’t close though, and it came back to bite them. Should be a pretty close matchup here as well, but I like Bucknell a little better cover-wise.
