The George Mason Patriots and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits meet Monday in college basketball action from Flagler Gymnasium. George Mason is sitting at 3-1 so far. The Patriots lost to Charlotte in their Sunday matchup. As for South Dakota State, they’re 1-3 and coming off a loss to UCF. George Mason Patriots
The Patriots opened up the season with three straight wins. George Mason kicked off with a 72-61 win over Monmouth, then took out Austin Peay 67-45 in game two. The Patriots were able to dispatch a pesky Cornell team 90-83, shooting 50 percent from the floor and going 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from 3-point range.
George Mason hit the wall in the Charlotte game on Sunday. The Patriots scored just 22 points in the first half and ended up limping to a 54-49 defeat. Leading the scoring was Keyshawn Hall with 18 points and eight rebounds. Darius Maddox added 13 points with three steals.
South Dakota State Jackrabbits
Over on the South Dakota State side, they’ve been giving up quite a few points in their three losses so far. The Jackrabbits did beat Dakota Wesleyan 83-55 on November 8, but they otherwise fell 81-75 to Akron and 91-68 to Kansas State in their first three games.
South Dakota State took another loss to UCF in their Sunday matchup. The Jackrabbits trailed 32-30 at the break and couldn’t overcome the gap in an eventual 83-80 loss. Charlie Easley led the team on his 21 points and six rebounds alongside three steals.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m probably going to try George Mason in this one. The Patriots didn’t play great in a defense-heavy matchup versus Charlotte on Sunday, shooting 33.3 percent from the field and 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from outside. George Mason was pretty evenly matched to the 49ers otherwise though, and they’d been playing great this season heading into that game.
As for South Dakota State, they had a good shooting night in the UCF loss with 44.4 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The Jackrabbits also owned the boards 40-29 but coughed up 16 turnovers. South Dakota State should be able to follow right along in this game if they shoot well, but I think the Patriots have the cover.
