Colgate Raiders
The Raiders came out of the gate this year with a two-point win over Brown, shooting a nice 48.1 percent from the field in the victory. The next pair were both losses however. Colgate dropped one 79-75 to Syracuse, then came back with a limp performance against Yale in a 68-50 defeat.
On Saturday versus Gardner-Webb, the Raiders held the Bulldogs to just 20 points in the first half on the way to a 59-52 victory. Leading the team in scoring was Braeden Smith with 25 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. Ryan Moffatt added 12 points with six rebounds as well.
Weber State Wildcats
Over on the Wildcats’ side, they took out Benedictine AZ 96-62 in their opener this year, then kept it going with a nice 61-57 win over Saint Mary’s in game two. Weber State won that matchup despite getting out-rebounded 41-26. The Wildcats couldn’t topple Gardner-Webb on Friday however, falling 62-61 in a rough outcome.
In their Saturday game versus Yale, the Wildcats gave up a 33-29 halftime lead but scored 16 points in overtime during a 75-65 win. Weber State got a double-double from Dillon Jones with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Steven Verplancken posted 15 points with three rebounds and 8-of-8 from the line.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll just take Weber State. The Wildcats haven’t scored great so far this year however, so they’ll probably have to lean into the defensive effort here. In Saturday’s game, Weber State fought off a plucky Yale team despite shooting just 39.3 percent from the field. The Wildcats hit 19-of-20 from the free throw line though, and bagged 39 rebounds.
As for Colgate, they shot just 39.6 percent from the field in their Saturday win and got edged out on the boards 34-33. Still, it was a reasonable effort otherwise. The Raiders should match up well against Weber State, so I’d expect this one to be pretty close.
