UNC Greensboro Spartans
The Spartans posted a nice effort out of the gate this year in their opener versus North Carolina A&T. UNC Greensboro won that one 94-78, thanks mostly to a 47.2 percent field goal rate and 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from outside. The Spartans also dominated on the boards in that victory, outpacing the Aggies 49-28.
Game two versus Vanderbilt was a much tougher matchup for the Spartans. UNC Greensboro scored just 29 points in the first half and couldn’t recover in a 74-70 defeat. Leading the team in scoring was Keyshaun Langley with 26 points, three steals and two rebounds. Mikeal Brown-Jones added 24 points with three rebounds as well.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Over on the Razorbacks’ side, it’s been smooth sailing through three games so far. Arkansas drilled Alcorn State 93-59 in their opener, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor and bagging a 44-26 rebounding advantage. The Razorbacks kept it going in game two versus Gardner-Webb in an 86-68 win. Arkansas shot 50 percent in that one with another 46 rebounds.
In game three versus Old Dominion, Arkansas had their closest matchup so far. The Razorbacks sported a modest 37-31 edge at the break and maintained the pace from there in an 86-77 win. El Ellis logged 17 points and eight assists, while Davonte Davis posted 16 points and five rebounds. Makhi Mitchell added 15 points and 10 rebounds as well.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably just stay with Arkansas in this one. I’m not quite as high on the Razorbacks after their tepid performance against a plucky Old Dominion team on Monday, however. Arkansas had a solid shooting outing with 50.8 percent from the field and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range in that one. That said, the Razorbacks hit just 18-of-29 (62.1 percent) from the line and got out-rebounded 41-40. The 15 team assists, six blocks and four turnovers were a solid touch, however.
As for UNC Greensboro, they were outfoxed 44-31 on the boards by Vanderbilt and shot just 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from outside in their loss this week. The Spartans haven’t been too bad on field goals in their two games, so they could put up a decent score in this one. I don’t think they’ll follow along closely enough to cover, though.
