The Sacramento State Hornets and the Tulane Green Wave meet Friday in college basketball action from Devlin Fieldhouse. Sacramento is 1-2 on the year and coming off their first win over Pacific Union. As for Tulane, they own a 2-0 record right now following a win over Northwestern State last Thursday. Sacramento State Hornets
The Hornets had a couple of tricky matchups right out of the gate this year, both losses. Sacramento State shot just 37.1 percent in their opener versus Nevada, resulting in a 77-63 defeat. Game two versus Stanford wasn’t a whole lot better, as the Hornets shot 38.2 percent from the field in a 91-73 loss.
In their latest game versus Pacific Union on Tuesday, Sac State got into the win column for the first time. The Hornets scored 64 points in each half on the way to a 128-66 blowout win. Duncan Powell was the high man with a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. Zee Hamoda had a nice game as well with 19 points and five rebounds.
Tulane Green Wave
Over on the Tulane side, they’ve only got two games in the books so far but the results have been solid. The Wave beat Nicholls State 91-81 in their opener, shooting 50.8 percent from the field with 17 team assists and 13 steals. Tulane got out-rebounded 43-34 however, and shot just 8-of-30 (26.7 percent) from 3-point range.
The Green Wave took on Northwestern State in their most recent matchup last Thursday. Tulane held a 48-40 lead by halftime and eventually managed the win 88-71. Kevin Cross put up 23 points with eight rebounds and six assists, while Kolby King added 20 points with two rebounds and two assists in the victory.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll probably just stick with Tulane in this one. The Green Wave are looking pretty good in the record books so far, but there are a few issues they need to fix. Tulane shot just 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) in another rough 3-point shooting performance last week versus Northwestern State. The Wave held a slim rebounding lead 35-34, but had just six on offense to the Demons’ 11 offensive boards. All of that said, Tulane should be able to handle Sacramento State at Devlin if all goes well. They’ll need to develop a presence under the basket early and hit some outside shots in the second half, however.
