Grand Canyon Antelopes
The Antelopes have looked pretty good through two games so far. First came a matchup with Southeast Missouri State in the opener, as Grand Canyon scored 54 points in the first half on the way to an 88-67 win. The Antelopes shot 50 percent from the field in that one, hauling in 48 rebounds with 11 team assists.
In game two versus Northern Arizona, the Antelopes recorded another win—this time 89-55 following 48 second-half points. Topping the scorers was Sydney Curry with 17 points and two rebounds off the bench. Both Ray Harrison and Collin Moore added 12 points apiece, combining for seven rebounds and six assists.
San Francisco Dons
Over on the Dons’ side, they didn’t have any issues with Bethesda in their opener, scoring a ridiculous 82 points in the first half during a 128-59 blowout victory. Game two was an 84-52 win over St. Francis PA. San Francisco shot 56.4 percent from the field in that one with 40.9 percent from 3-point range and 33 rebounds.
The Dons took their first loss of the year on Sunday versus Boise State. After falling behind 32-24 in the first half, San Francisco scored 34 more points in a 63-58 defeat. Four starters finished in double-figures, including Mike Sharavjamts’ 13 points and three assists. Ndewedo Newbury added 11 points with six rebounds as well.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’ll just stay with Grand Canyon in this one. The Antelopes are looking pretty good so far, and they’re coming off a well-rounded win over Northern Arizona. Grand Canyon shot a nice 56.4 percent from the floor in that one with a 41-24 rebounding advantage. The foul shooting could have been better (21-of-28 for 75 percent) however, and the Antelopes coughed up 13 turnovers along the way.
As for San Francisco, they shot just 4-of-19 (21.1 percent) from 3-point range in their loss to Boise State and also gave away 17 turnovers. The Dons are going to need to score quickly and often in order to keep a cover pace on Grand Canyon, and I don’t think they’ve got the legs to cover.
