Binghamton Bearcats
The Bearcats faced off against Northwestern in their opener last Monday, taking a 39-36 edge into halftime. Binghamton faded with just 22 points from there and got out-rebounded 36-31 in a 72-61 loss, though. In game two the Bearcats fell again, this time 89-60 to Pittsburgh. Binghamton was outmuscled on the boards 50-32 and shot a middling 34.4 percent from the field.
The Bearcats finally got their first win of the year in game three versus Keystone. Binghamton exploded for 59 points in the first half and cruised to the blowout win 104-50. Leading the way was Evan Ashe with 19 points, while Gavin Walsh collected a team-high 12 rebounds with nine points.
Loyola Greyhounds
Over on the Greyhounds’ side, they started out their year with a tricky matchup versus Florida. Loyola MD was down by 12 points going into the second half and didn’t get any closer in a 93-73 loss. The shooting was pretty solid at 45.8 percent from the floor, but the Greyhounds gave up 58.1 percent on the other side and lost the rebounding battle 39-29.
Loyola MD took on Brown this past Saturday in a very entertaining matchup. The Greyhounds scored 31 points in the first half, 36 in the second and 10 in overtime for a close 77-75 win. Deon Perry led the team with his 21 points and nine assists, while Golden Dike added 14 points and nine boards.
ANDREW’S FREE PICK
I’m going to take a stab on Binghamton here. The Bearcats have seen a couple of pretty good teams in their trio of games so far, and they’re coming off a confidence-boosting win versus an overmatched Keystone team. Binghamton shot a nice 58.7 percent from the field in that one and pulled down 58 rebounds in a well-rounded performance. This game obviously won’t be so simple, but the Bearcats have developed some quality experience in the early-going and I think they can maintain a cover pace if all goes well. Loyola MD has scored pretty well themselves with 150 combined points in two games, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a fairly high total in this one. Should be an entertaining matchup.
