The New Mexico Lobos will play the Saint Mary’s Gaels in a non-conference game on Thursday night at University Credit Union Pavilion in Moraga, California. New Mexico blew out Texas Southern in their season opener, while Saint Mary’s absolutely dominated a non-Division 1 team.
New Mexico Preview
The New Mexico Lobos are 1-0 this season after they defeated Texas Southern by a score of 92-55 in their first game. New Mexico led by 17 points at the half and they were able to score 51 points in the second half for the easy win. The Lobos shot 44.8% from the field, 43.5% on three pointers, and 81.5% on free throws in the game. New Mexico out rebounded Texas Southern by a total of 53-37, recorded 20 assists, and turned the ball over nine times in the win. Jamal Mashburn Jr. led the Lobos with 15 points and five assists, while Donovan Dent added 12 points and six assists in the game. New Mexico allowed 55 points on 29.4% shooting from the field.
Saint Mary’s Preview
The Saint Mary’s Gaels are 1-0 this year after they defeated Stanislaus State by a score of 107-28 in their last game. Saint Mary’s absolutely dominated this game and scored 50 points or more in both halves. The Gaels shot 56.5% from the field, 33.3% on three pointers, and 75.9% on free throws in the win. Saint Mary’s recorded 59 rebounds, 22 assists, and turned the ball over eight times. Mason Forbes led the Gaels with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Aidan Mahaney added 15 points and five assists in the game. Saint Mary’s allowed 28 points on 15.5% shooting and forced 17 turnovers in the victory.
This game sort of flies under the radar, but it should be an excellent matchup between two solid mid-major programs. New Mexico really dominated a Texas Southern team that is normally pretty good, while Saint Mary’s had a very easy first opponent. The Gaels are ranked in the Top-25 and will be at home for this matchup, but New Mexico is a decent team. If this game was at a neutral site or at New Mexico, I think the Lobos would have a great chance to get a win, but it is not easy to go on the road against Saint Mary’s. Give me the Gaels at home.
