Southern Preview
The Southern Jaguars are 0-1 this season after they lost to TCU by a score of 108-75 in their first game. Southern allowed TCU to score 54 points in each half and even though they scored 75 points, they still lost by more than 30 points. The Jaguars shot 44.6% from the field, 41.7% on three pointers, and 53.8% on free throws in the loss. Southern was out rebounded by a total of 45-33, had 14 assists, and turned the ball over 16 times. Brandon Davis led the Jaguars with 20 points and three rebounds, while JaRonn Wilkens added 10 points and three rebounds. Southern allowed 108 points on 61.4% field goal shooting.
UNLV Preview
The UNLV Rebels were 19-13 (7-11) last year and they finished seventh in the Mountain West standings. UNLV defeated Southern in their season opener last year by a score of 66-56. The Rebels defeated Air Force in their first game of the Mountain West Tournament, but they lost their next game to Boise State by a score of 87-76 in overtime. UNLV scored 74.3 points per game with 33.3 rebounds per game, and 12.8 assists per game, while allowing 70 points against per game last season. Luis Rodriguez returns this year after being the third leading scorer last season, as he averaged 10.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game. UNLV shot 43.2% from the field, 72.3% on free throws, and 34.9% on three pointers last year.
Pick
Southern was able to score 75 points in their first game of the season against TCU and they shot decently from the field, but they allowed 108 points and couldn’t get any stops defensively. UNLV is coming off of a below average season for them, but they should get a good start in this game. The Rebels lost their two leading scorers from last year, so they will need plenty of guys to step up here. After watching Southern play defense against TCU, I have to take the over here. I expect UNLV to score 80+ points in this game, while Southern will put together a decent night. Take the over here.
David’s Pick Over 143.5
