The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles will head up to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers in non-conference play this Tuesday from Assembly Hall on the Big Ten Network.
Florida Gulf Coast Preview
Florida Gulf Coast went 17-15 last season, with a 7-11 record in Atlantic Sun play. The Eagles regressed by five wins in Patrick Chambers first season, and they’ll look to rediscover some of their Dunk City magic from the 2010’s this Winter.
FGCU scored 71.3 points per game, on 43% shooting, while allowing 69.4 ppg during the 2022-23 season. The Eagles will return their top four scorers, and a veteran team overall led by senior guard Isaiah Thompson (14.9 ppg, 3.2 apg). This contest will mark a homecoming of sorts for the Zionsville native and former Purdue guard, and look to raise some eyebrows with a strong effort here in Bloomington.
Indiana Hoosiers Preview
Indiana went 23-12 last season, with a 12-8 record in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers campaign closed with a round of 32 loss to Miami, and they’ll look to take things further here in former Knicks coach and IU alum Mike Woodson’s third season..
Indiana scored 74.7 points per game, on 48% shooting, while allowing 68.7 ppg. The Hoosiers will have to replace longtime frontcourt stars Trayce Jackson-Davis and brace Thompson, along with Jalen Hood-Schifino, but they will have senior guards Xavier Johnson and Trey Galloway in the fold. Johnson led IU in assists (4.9), while scoring close to ten points per game last season, and he could become one of the best players in the conference in a bigger role this season.
FGCU vs Indiana Trends
FGCU is 0-0 against the spread, with a 0-0 O/U record
IU is 0-0 ATS, with a 0-0 over/under record.
Corey’s Free Pick
There’s a reason this one doesn’t open with a blowout margin, as Florida Gulf Coast comes in with an experienced team, capable of stealing one from the Hoosiers early. Isaiah Thompson’s name and style of play mirrors a former IU & Detroit Pistons great, and with him having so much history with the basketball state of Indiana, you can bet he’ll bring his best and his team will come with him. I do believe Mike Woodson’s team will avoid the game one blemish at Assembly Hall, but they may experience growing pains early on, as they will need to replace a lot of production. Let’s spot FGCU the points for this non-conference battle, and give the Under a look, as it could come down to a matter of stops.
