The Albany Great Danes will head to Amherst to meet the Massachusetts Minutemen in non-conference play this Monday from Mullins Memorial Center on ESPN+. UMass has won both meetings, including last year’s matchup at home, 87-73.
Albany Great Danes Preview
Albany finished at 8-23 last season, with a 3-13 record in AEC play. The Great Danes went below .500 for the fifth season in a row, and they’ll attempt to turn things around this Winter.
Albany averaged 67.3 points per game, on 41% shooting, while allowing 75.2 ppg during the 2022-23 season. The Great Danes will have to replace their top four scorers from last year’s 8-win team, so they may experience growing pains early on as they look for offense.
UMass Minutemen Preview
Massachusetts went 15-16 last season, with a 6-12 record in Atlantic Ten play. The Minutemen ended their season with a loss to Richmond in the first round of the A10 tournament, and they’ll look to post their first full winning season since 2014-15 in former KState and SC head coach Frank Martin’s second year at the helm.
UMass scored 69.8 points per game, on 41% shooting, while allowing 71.4 ppg. The Minutemen will have to replace most of their backcourt production, but they do bring back veteran forward Matt Cross. The Beverly, MA native returned home after spending time at Miami and Louisville, and he led UMass in rebounding (6.3), while scoring 12.2 ppg.
Albany vs Massachusetts Trends

Corey’s Free Pick
When there isn’t much continuity in the rotation, you view the matchup on the sidelines, and that’s how I like approaching this contest. Albany really struggled last season, while Massachusetts showed signs of improvement in Frank Martin’s first season in charge. Both schools will be figuring things out on the fly in this season-opening bout, so the Under will be in play, but let’s roll with the host to begin the campaign with a cover in the UMass/UAlbany matchup.
