The St. Francis (PA) Red Flash will play the UCLA Bruins on Monday night at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. UCLA made a decent run in the NCAA Tournament last year, while St. Francis did finish above .500 in conference play.
St. Francis Preview
The St. Francis Red Flash were 13-17 (9-7) last season and finished fourth in the NEC. St. Francis struggled in the non-conference, but they had a pretty good year in conference play. The Red Flash won their first game in the NEC Tournament, but they lost in the Semifinals against FDU by a score of 70-50. Last season, St. Francis averaged 73 points per game with 33.4 rebounds per game, and 13.9 assists per game, while allowing 73.7 points against per game. St. Francis lost their top five leading scorers from last season, but they do return Cam Gregory, who averaged 5.1 points per game, 1.5 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game. St. Francis shot 46.2% from the field, 70.4% on free throws, and 37.9% on three pointers last season.
UCLA Preview
The UCLA Bruins went 31-6 (18-2) last year and finished first in the PAC-12 standings. UCLA played very well all season long and ended the regular season on a 10 game winning streak. The Bruins defeated Colorado and Oregon in their first two games in the PAC-12 Tournament, but they lost to Arizona by a score of 61-59. UCLA also defeated UNC Asheville and Northwestern in the NCAA Tournament, but lost to Gonzaga by a score of 79-76 in the Sweet 16. UCLA scored 74.1 points per game with 35.4 rebounds per game and 14.5 assists per game, while allowing 60.7 points against per game last season. UCLA lost a ton of production from last season, and they will have a lot of new faces on the team this year. UCLA shot 45.8% from the field, 72.2% on free throws, and 34.7% on three pointers last season.
Pick
Both of these teams lost a lot from last season, but I trust UCLA to find new talent a lot more than I trust St. Francis. With that being said, UCLA is a massive favorite in this game and I don’t know how comfortable they will be in their first game with a lot of new bodies. I think UCLA is going to struggle a little bit in the first half, but they will play much better in the second half. I think UCLA wins big, but I am taking St. Francis with the points.
David’s Pick St. Francis +29.5
