The Purdue Boilermakers will open the 2023-24 season by hosting the Sanford Bulldogs this Monday in West Lafayette from Mackey Arena on the Big Ten Network.
Samford Bulldogs Preview
Samford finished at 21-11 last season, with a 15-3 record in SoCon play. The Bulldogs ended their campaign with a loss to Chattanooga in the conference tournament, and they’ll be looking to return to postseason play for the first time in over two decades this Winter.
Samford scored 78.6 points per game, on 75% shooting, while allowing 71.7 ppg during the 2022-23 season. The Bulldogs will be looking to replace their four leading scorers in what will be a very tough season-opening matchup. Veteran guards A.J. Staton-McCray (8.2 ppg) and Jaden Campbell (7.7 ppg) will likely ascend into bigger roles early on this season.
Purdue Boilermakers Preview
Purdue is coming off of a successful regular season that saw them go 29-6, and win both Big Ten titles. The Boilermakers season ended prematurely with a round of 64 loss to Cinderella hopeful Fairleigh Dickinson, and they’ll be looking to make a deeper run when March rolls around this year.
Purdue scored 72.7 points per game, on 55.3% shooting, while allowing 62.7 ppg. The Boilermakers return the bulk of their conference-winning squad, let by the colossal Zach Edey in the middle. Purdue will likely play thru 7’4 senior again this year after he was dominant in the lead role last season, averaging 22.2 ppg and 12.9 rpg. The Boilermakers also return their five top scorers outside of Edey, and they’ll will likely compete strong again here in 2023-24.

Corey’s Free Pick
Although Furman would go on to make more noise, Samford had an impressive season in the SoCon last year, and despite that strong showing, they are really in for an uphill battle here in West Lafayette. Purdue comes into this season humbled, with their guard up, and motivated, so I really like backing them to come out strong with a big win over the Bulldogs. Trust Purdue in their season-opener.
