The Houston Cougars will host the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks for game one of the 2022-23 season this Monday from the Fertitta Center on ESPN+. Houston and Louisana Monroe have faced off twice, and the Cougars have taken both meetings by double figures, including the most recent back in 2015, 76-64.
UL-Monroe Warhawks Preview
Louisiana-Monroe went 11-21 last season, with a 7-11 record in Sun Belt play. The Warhawks had another rough campaign that ended with a first round conference tournament loss to Georgia State, and they’ll attempt to be more competitive here in 2023.
UL-Monroe scored 67.4 points per game, on 40% shooting, while allowing 69.8 ppg during the 2022-23 season. The Warhawks do gave the benefit of returning their top scorer in Tyreek Locure (14.4 ppg), but they will face an uphill battle here with a rugged Houston team.
Houston Cougars Preview
Houston went 33-4 last season, with a 17-1 record in AAC play. The Cougars season ended with a Sweet 16 loss to Miami, and they’ll look to make some noise in their first year as members of the Big 12.
Houston scored 74.9 points per game, on 53.1% shooting, while allowing 57.5 ppg. The Cougars lost three starters in Marcus Sasser, Jarice Walker, and Tramon Mark, but they do return veteran leader Jamal Shead at the lead guard position. The 6’1 senior has been a vocal point of the Cougars attack for three seasons now, and he’ll likely thrive in a bigger role this season.
Monroe vs Houston Trends
ULM is 0-0 against the spread, with a 0-0 O/U record
HOU is 0-0 ATS, with a 0-0 over/under record.
Corey’s Free Pick
Houston had another successful campaign end in despair last season, and with them set to be members of the Big 12 this Winter, I believe they’ll open up strong here in what should be a manageable contest. UL-Monroe could be a one-man show early on, the Cougs will likely keep all of that under control. The margin is a bit massive, so let’s lean on a stiff showing from Houston here at home, and take the Under for this matchup.
