Long Beach State Preview
Long Beach State went 17-16 last season, with a 11-9 record in Big West play. The Beach ended their season with a first round loss to Cal Poly in the first round of the conference tournament, and they’ll be looking to return to the Dance for the first time in 13 years.
LBSU scored 76.1 points per game, on 45% shooting, while allowing 74.4 ppg during the 2022-23 season. The Beach returns a good chunk of last year’s production with Marcus Tsohonis and the Traore brothers, Aboubacar and Lassina, returning. Tsohonis, a former VCU guard, transferred in last season, and brought stability to the backcourt, while the Traore’s man the frontcourt and provided two-way ability.
Portland Pilots Preview
Portland finished at 14-19 last season, with a 5-11 record in WCC play. The Pilots season ended their campaign with a loss to BYU in the second round of the conference tournament, and they’ll look to finally breakthrough in the growlingly competitive division this Winter.
Portland scored 77.8 points per game, on 52.6% shooting, while allowing 78.6 ppg. The Pilots got their biggest piece back when swingman Tyler Robertson (15.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 5.3 apg) opted to return. The versatile senior was one of the best players in the conference last year, and he’ll likely pick up where he left off with even more of a green light this season.

Corey’s Free Pick
These Big West/WCC matchups are always interesting early in the season, as a lot of the schools border each other and play mirroring styles. Portland’s going to have a chance at home in this one with Tyler Robertson, but we also know the Pilots tend to allow a bunch of points, and that likely won’t change this Fall. Long Beach brings in enough production to steal this one on the road, but let’s target the total here and roll with the Over for this contest on Monday night.
