Incarnate Word Preview
The Incarnate Word Cardinals went 12-19 (6-12) last year and finished tied for 8th in the Southland Conference standings. Incarnate Word didn’t have the best season last year and finished the regular season by losing five of their last six games. The Cardinals did not qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament. Last year, Incarnate Word scored 70.8 points per game with 31.3 rebounds per game and 12.3 assists per game, while allowing 73.9 points against per game. The Cardinals top three scorers are gone, but their fourth leading scorer returns. Davante Dennis averaged 8.3 points per game with 3.3 rebounds per game, and 1.1 steals per game. Incarnate Word shot 44.2% from the field, 74.8% on free throws, and 34.8% on three pointers last year.
Texas Preview
The Texas Longhorns were 29-9 (12-6) last season and finished second in the Big 12 standings. Texas only lost one game before January, but they did hit a couple of rough spots in conference play. The Longhorns defeated Oklahoma State and TCU in the Big 12 Tournament, before beating Kansas in the Championship game. Texas went on to defeat Colgate, Penn State, and Xavier in the NCAA Tournament, before they lost to Miami in the Elite Eight by a score of 88-81. Texas scored 78 points per game with 34.1 rebounds per game and 16.2 assists per game, while allowing 67.8 points against per game last year. Texas did lose their top three leading scorers from last season, but Tyrese Hunter averaged 10.3 points per game, 3.0 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game. Texas shot 46.8% from the field, 75.2% on free throws, and 33.9% on three pointers last season.
Pick
Incarnate Word comes into this season looking to improve upon a bad season, while Texas is looking to make another run deep in the NCAA Tournament. Both teams lost their top three scorers from last season, but the difference is that Texas can replenish those departures with very talented players, while Incarnate Word cannot. Texas’ defense will be the difference in this game. I expect the Longhorns to put up a bunch of points and shoot very well, but their defense will suffocate the Cardinals. I think we see a lopsided score, but Incarnate Word’s inability to score makes me like the under here.
