The Rice Owls and the Duquesne Dukes will head down to Daytona Beach to face off in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational at the Ocean Center on FloSports. Duquesne won the lone two non-conference meetings back in 2007 and 2008.

Duquesne comes in at 20-12 after losing to La Salle in the first round of the A10 tournament. The Dukes watched their halftime lead disappear, as the Explorers would storm back to hand them an eleven-point loss. Duquesne is scoring 76.2 points per game, while allowing ppg, and shooting 44.7% from the field.
Duquesne responded to one of the worst seasons in score history with a 20-win season, and they’ll look to advance past the Owls here. Dae Dae Grant came over from Miami (OH) to lead the Dukes in scoring (15.1) after a hot start to the season. VCU transfer Jimmy Clark III went off for a season-high 27 points in the first round loss to La Salle, and he’s up to 12.2 ppg.
Rice Betting Preview
Rice comes in at 18-15 after losing to UAB in the Conference USA Quarterfinals. The Owls were blitzed by the Blazers in both halves en route to a massive 27-point loss, 87-60. Rice is scoring 76.7 points per game, while allowing ppg, and shooting 46.8% from the floor.
Rice capitalized on the big market of Houston to land this bid, and after dropping ten of their final thirteen games, it’s uncertain how they’ll come out here. The Owls have played through their veteran guards Quincy Olivari and Travis Evee. Olivari leads the team in scoring at 18.8 ppg after a productive February. Evee has scored 20 points in two of the last three games, and he’s averaging 15.3 ppg. Junior forward Max Fielder leads the Owls in rebounding (7.4), while scoring 10.7 ppg.

Rice’s stretch of play down the stretch was alarming, but they match up well with the Duquesne, and after having extended time to regroup, they should come out energized. If they come out with high energy, combined with winning production from their top scorers, they’ll have a chance in this contest. While I do like spotting Rice the points here, this total is a bit high for two teams that haven’t played in ten days, and I like testing what these two offenses are made of.
