The Texas Longhorns and the Penn State Nittany Lions will meet in the second round of the Midwest Region in Des Moines at the Wells Fargo Arena on CBS. This will mark the first time these two stories programs face off.
Penn State Betting Preview
Penn State comes in at 23-13 after defeating Texas A&M in the first round. The Nittany Lions pounced on the Aggies early, and cruised to a 17-point win, 76-59. Penn State is scoring 72.4 points per game, while allowing 67.4 ppg, and shooting 46.5% from the field.
Penn State has caught fire and after winning nine of their last eleven games, they'll look to pick up another victory over the Lone Star state here. Penn State plays through the veteran trio of Jalen Pickett, Seth Lundy, and Andrew Funk. Pickett flirted with a triple-double in the win over A&M, and he’s posting a strong line of 17.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and 6.7 apg. Lundy leads the team in rebounding (6.2), while scoring 14.3 ppg. Funk went off for 27 points against the Aggies, and he’s third on the team at 12.5 ppg.
Texas Betting Preview
Texas comes in at 27-8 after defeating Colgate in the first round. The Longhorns controlled both halves to beat the Raiders by twenty, 81-61. Texas is scoring 77.9 points per game, while allowing 67.5 ppg, and shooting 47% from the floor.
Texas has won their last five games, and after handling Colgate comfortably, they look to stop Penn State’s momentum here. Veteran guard Marcus Carr scored 17 points in the win over the Raiders, and he leads the Longhorns in scoring (15.9) and assists (4.1). Fellow senior guard Sir’Jabari Rice scored a game-high 23 points in the first round victory, and he’s up to 12.9 ppg. Junior forward Timmy Allen leads the team in rebounding (5.4), while scoring 10.3ppg.
Penn State vs Texas Trends
Penn State is 16-16-1 against the spread this season, with a 20-15-1 over/under record. Texas is 18-14 ATS this year, with a 16-16-3 o/u record.
Corey's Free Pick
Penn State came out hot against Texas A&M, but I don’t think the same thing happens here with a more disciplined Longhorns team. Texas performed well against a fluid Colgate offense, and they’ve been one of the top defensive teams in the country this season. The Nittany Lions will have to work a bit more buckets here Saturday, and this could lead to more possession-heavy contest that should affect the scoreboard. Take the under for the Penn State/Texas matchup.
