Furman Betting Preview
Furman comes in at 28-7 after defeating Virginia in the first round. The Paladins fought through adversity and questionable foul calling, then capitalized on an all-time blunder from the Cavs to beat them by one, 68-67. Furman scores 81.7 points per game, while allowing 72.3 ppg, and shooting 48.1% from the field.
Furman delivered the first blow of March Madness when they upset the number-four seeded Cavaliers, and they’ll look to double down here with an identically physical unit. The Paladins possess one of the top offensive units in the nation again this season, and they’re led by fifth-year veteran Mike Bothwell. The 6’3 guard scored 26 points in the semifinal win over WCU, and after fouling out prematurely versus Virginia, he’ll look to bounce back here. Bothwell leads Furman in scoring for the third season in a row at 17.8 ppg. Veteran forward Jalen Slawson hit some big shots against UVA, and after posting a 19-point double-double, he leads the team in rebounding (7.2), while scoring 15.8 ppg. Sophomore guard JP Pegues hit the biggest shot of his life to eliminate Virginia, and he’s averaging 12.0 ppg and a team-lead 4.0 apg.
San Diego State Betting Preview
San Diego State comes in 28-6 after defeating Charleston in the first round. The Aztecs fought off a feisty second half from the Cougars to down them by six, 63-57. San Diego State is scoring 71.8 points per game, while allowing 65.8 ppg, and shooting 44.4% from the floor.
San Diego State's physical advantage got them past Charleston, but they’re going to have the rev the offense up here with Furman. hThe Aztecs play a collective brand of basketball, and thrive on both sides of the ball. Veteran guard Matt Bradley scored 17 points in the win over Charleston, and he leads SDSU in scoring (13.1). Senior forward Jaedon Ledee double-doubled in the win over USU, and he’s up to 7.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg. The Aztecs get notable contributions from seven more players, and they’re one of the deeper teams in the country.
Furman vs San Diego State Trends
Furman is 19-13 against the spread this season, with a 18-14 over/under record. SDSU is 16-15-2 ATS this year, with a 14-19 o/u record.
Corey's Free Pick
San Diego State’s vendetta against the state of South Carolina has a chance to continue here, but they’re going to have to come out much sharper. I watched both teams play in the first round, and prior to jumping for joy as the Furman ended UVA’s season, I saw a free firing, three-heavy offense. The Paladins possess the confidence to outshoot the Aztecs, and if they’re shots start falling again, that may be troublesome for a possession-heavy SDSU offense. San Diego State will have to control the flow to win this game on the defensive end, and I like the under for this second round matchup.
