The Miami Hurricanes and the Drake Bulldogs will meet in the first round of the Midwest Region in Albany at the MVP Arena on TBS. This will mark the first time these two schools face off.

Drake won thirteen of their last fourteen games en route to another MVC crown, and they’ll look to take down the Canes here. Sophomore Tucker DeVries’ has delivered as the Bulldogs leading scorer this season, and after scoring 22 points in the conference championship, he averages 19.0 ppg, while grabbing 5.6 rpg. Senior point guard Roman Penn double-doubled in the quarterfinal win over Murray State, and he’s now up to 12.6 ppg and a team-lead 5.4 apg. Veteran forward Darnell Brodie grabbed 17 boards in the semifinal win over SIU, and he leads Drake in rebounding (7.3), while scoring 8.8 ppg.

Miami dropped to 25-7 after losing to Duke in the ACC Semifinals The Canes trailed the Blue Devils throughout the contest, and ended up falling by seven, 85-78. Miami scores 79.4 points per game, while allowing 71.6 ppg, and shooting 48.6% from the field.
Miami put together another impressive season, and after capturing a share of the ACC regular season title, they’ll look to avoid an early exit like their co-champions. Isaiah Wong leads the charge for a third season in a row for Jim Larranaga’s squad. The junior guard scored 22 points in the loss to Duke, and he’s leading the Canes in scoring (16.2) and assists (3.4), while grabbing 4.3 rpg. Former GMU guard Jordan Miller has scored 17 points or more in the last four games, and he’s now up to 15.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Sophomore forward Norchad Omier double-doubled in three of four games prior to leaving the Duke game early, and his status should be monitored here.

Miami has proved a lot of the past few years, and they’re trustworthy in this vaunted five-versus-twelve seed matchup. The Canes won one of the toughest conferences in college basketball behind one of the more balanced attacks in the country, and I like their chances against an undersized Drake team. UVA’s loss on Thursday should definitely add a little motivation, and despite that result, I still like trusting the ACC school in this spot. Take Miami’s spread for this first round matchup.
