The San Diego Aztecs and the Charleston Cougars will meet in the first round of the South Region in Orlando at the Amway Center on truTV. SDSU won the lone meeting back in November of 2013, 72-52.

The Cougars trailed the Seahawks at the break, but they’d use a strong second half to win by five, 63-58. Charleston closed the season by winning ten straight games, and they’ll look to carry that momentum into the vaunted 5 versus 12 spot. The Cougars score at a high clip, and they’re one of the handful of teams in the country with five players averaging double figures. Senior guard Dalton Bolon leads the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg, and he’ll look to respond to a scoreless outing against Wilmington in the conference championship. Sophomore big Ante Brzovic scored 15 points or more in all three Colonial tourney wins, and he leads CoC in rebounding (5.9), while scoring 11.6 ppg. Veteran guard Ryan Larson scored a game-high 23 points in the win over UNCW, and he’s up to 10.6 ppg.

San Diego State jumped to 27-6 after defeating Utah State in the Mountain West Championship. The Aztecs and Aggies traded leads back-and-forth, but SDSU would pull away and win by five, 62-57. San Diego State is scoring 72.1 points per game, while allowing 65.8 ppg, and shooting 44.4% from the floor.
San Diego State has put together another impressive season, and they’re as real a threat to come out of the South Region. The Aztecs play a collective brand of basketball, and thrive on both sides of the ball. Veteran guard Matt Bradley scored 16 points in the MWC title game, and he leads SDSU in scoring (13.0). Senior forward Jaedon Ledee double-doubled in the win over USU, and he’s up to 7.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg. The Aztecs get notable contributions from seven more players, and they’re one of the deeper teams in the country.
