The Marquette Golden Eagles and the Xavier Musketeers will meet in New York City to battle in the Big East Championship at Madison Square Garden on FOX. f the Big East Tournament on FOX.
Xavier improved to 25-8 after defeating Creighton in the semifinals. The Musketeers controlled the entire contest and eliminated the Blue Jays with a 20-point win. Xavier is scoring 84.1 points per game, while allowing 75.5 ppg, and shooting 50.3% from the field.
Xavier has won their last five games, and they’ll look to avenge a one-point loss to Marquette here. The Musketeers carry an experienced lineup led by UTEP transfer Souley Boum. The 6’3 guard scored 23 points in the win over Creighton, and he’s up to team-leads of 16.8 ppg and 4.4 apg. Colby Jones double-doubled against the Jays, and he’s posting a nice line of 15.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, and a team-lead 4.5 apg. Jack Nunge led the team with 23 points in the quarterfinal win over DePaul, and he leads Xavier in rebounding (7.8), while scoring 14.3 ppg.
Marquette improved to 27-6 after defeating Connecticut in the semifinals. The Golden Eagles battled back-and-forth with the Huskies in vintage Big East fashion, and they advanced with a two-point win, 70-68. Marquette is scoring 80.5 points per game, while allowing 70.6 ppg, and shooting 49.5% from the field.
Marquette has won three straight games by two points, and they’ll look to become outright Big East champions here Saturday. Sophomore guard Kam Jones scored 23 points in the win over St.John’s, and he leads the team at 15.1 ppg. Junior guard Tyler Kolek has scored 17 points or more in six straight games, and he’s one of the top passers in the country at 7.9 apg, while scoring 12.9 ppg. Olivier-Maxence Prosper (12.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and Oso Ighodaro (11.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg) start up front for the Golden Eagles.
Xavier is 17-13-1 against the spread this season, with a 20-10-1 over/under record. Marquette is 19-11-1 ATS this year, with a 17-14 o/u record.
Marquette continues to escape by the skin of their teeth, and while it’d be cinematic for them to complete the weekend with another nail biting win, I don’t think they get as lucky with Xavier. The Musketeers were neck-and-neck with the Golden Eagles all season atop the conference standings, before a one-point loss in Milwaukee would halt their chase, and that should be fresh in mind. This should be a very good game, and with it being the third game in three days for both schools, the under will be in play. Beware of the possibility of overtime, and take the under for the Big East Championship.
