The UMass Lowell River Hawks and the Vermont Catamounts will face off in Burlington in the American East Final on ESPN2.
UMass Lowell improved to 26-7 after defeating New Hampshire in the semifinals. The River Hawks used a big second half to advance and beat the Wildcats by eleven, 75-64. Lowell is scoring 76.3 points per game, while allowing 56.2 ppg, and shooting 47.1% from the field.
UMass Lowell has won nine of their last ten games, with the one lost ironically coming to Vermont in Burlington, and they’ll look to avenge that here. Senior guard Everette Hammond hung 29 points on Vermont in the previous meeting, and he leads Lowell in scoring (13.8). Junior forward Abdoul Karin Coulibaly double-doubled in the season finale against New Hampshire, and he leads the team in rebounding (7.7), while scoring 11.5 ppg. Senior forward Allin Blunt led the team with 19 points in the win over UNH, and he’s up to 10.4 ppg.
Vermont moved to 22-11 after beating Binghamton in the semifinals. The Catamounts jumped out to a fast start and cruised to a 22-point win over Bearcats, 79-57. Vermont is scoring 68.3 points per game, while allowing 69.1 ppg, and shooting 45.3% from the field.
Vermont has won fourteen games in a row, with their last loss also ironically coming on the road to UMass Lowell. Senior guard Dylan Penn scored 26 points in the semifinal win over Binghamton. Fellow veteran guard Finn Sullivan scored 25 points in the last meeting with Lowell, and he’s second on the team at 11.8 ppg. Senior swingman Robin Duncan leads the team in rebounding (7.3).
Lowell is 19-11-1 against the spread this season, with a 18-13 over/under record. Vermont is 19-12-1 ATS this year, with a 19-13 o/u record.
Both schools are streaking into this contest, but it’s hard to ignore the longtime conference power in this spot. Vermont has won an astounding fourteen straight games, and with them having the privilege of hosting the conference tournament, I like them taking care of business Saturday morning.
