Texas Southern and Grambling will clash in a battle of Tigers for the SWAC Championship in Birmingham at the Bartow Arena on ESPN+.
Texas Southern moved to 13-20 after defeating Alabama A&M in the semifinals. The Tigers pulled away from the Bulldogs in the second half twere outscored by the Rattlers in both halves, and they fell by seven points. TSU scores 69.7 points per game, while allowing 73.9 ppg, and shooting 43% from the floor.
Texas Southern has played themselves in a position to sneak into the Big Dance, but they face an uphill battle here with Grambling State. Second-year forward Davion Barnes posted a 20-point double-double in the win over Alabama A&M, and he leads the Tigers in scoring (13.6). Senior forward Joirdon Karl Nicholas leads the team in boards (9.0), while scoring 10.9 ppg, but he’ll need to avoid foul trouble after a pair of quiet outings. .
Grambling State improved to 24-8 after defeating Jackson State in the semifinals. Grambling trailed JSU at the break, but a strong second half would lead to a nine-point win, 78-69. Grambling State scores 69.3 points per game, while allowing 73.9 ppg, and shooting 45.8% from the floor.
Grambling State has won eleven straight games, and they’ll look to beat Texas Southern for a third time this season. Redshirt senior Cameron Christian has scored 15 points or more in each of the last three games, and he leads GSU in scoring (13.3), while grabbing 5.5 rpg. Veteran guard Shawn Cowart scored 18 points in the win over Jackson State, and he’s up to 11.8 ppg. Junior forward Jourdan Smith scored 23 points in the quarterfinal win over Bethune-Cookman, and he’s averaging 8.7 ppg and 5.0 rpg.
Texas Southern is 8-19-2 against the spread this season, with a 20-10-1 over/under record. Grambling State is 16-11-1 ATS this year, with a 17-14 o/u record.
Texas Southern shook up the conference tourney by upsetting Alcorn State, but it’s hard to see them slowing what Grambling State has brewing, especially after losing to them by double figures twice. GSU has earned the right to become outright champions, and I don’t think they blow the opportunity to go dancing after winning eleven straight games. Take Grambling State’s spread for the SWAC title game.
