The Penn State Nittany Lions and the Indiana Hoosiers will meet in Chicago to battle in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament at the United Center on CBS.
Penn State moved to 21-12 after defeating Northwestern in the quarterfinals. The Nittany Lions stung the hosting Wildcats in overtime and advanced with a two-point win, 67-65. Penn State is scoring 72.4 points per game, while allowing 67.4 ppg, and shooting 46.3% from the field.
Penn State has won six of their last seven games, and they’ll look to reach the Big 12 title game for the first time in over a decade. Penn State plays through the veteran trio of Jalen Pickett, Seth Lundy, and Andrew Funk. Pickett nearly double-doubled in the win over Northwestern, and he’s posting a strong line of 17.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, and 7.0 apg. Lundy leads the team in rebounding (6.3), while scoring 14.1 ppg. Funk hit six threes in the second round win over Illinois, and he’s third on the team at 12.3 ppg.
Indiana improved to 22-10 after beating Maryland in the quarterfinals. The Hoosiers trailed at the break, but they’d use a strong second half to down the Terps by ten, 70-60. Indiana is scoring 76.5 points per game, while allowing 67.8 ppg, and shooting 49.5% from the field.
Indiana played well against Maryland, and they’ll look to return to the Big Ten title game with a win Saturday. Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis continues to carry this Hoosier team to the promiseland. The junior forward has scored 24 points or more in six of the last eight games, and he leads IU in scoring (20.5) and rebounding (11.0). Jalen Hood-Schifino scored 19 points in the quarterfinal win over Maryland, he’s up to 13.4 ppg.
Penn State is 16-13-2 against the spread this season, with a 17-13-1 over/under record. Indiana is 14-16-1 ATS this year, with a 18-12-1 o/u record.
Penn State eliminating Illinois and Northwestern in Chicago deserves some attention, and despite the heartbreak they’ve dealt out to the Windy City, they’ve come pretty close losing themselves. The Nittany Lions have won their last four games by three points or less, so while they’re proving to be battle-tested, they’re also vulnerable to defeat at the same time. They should give the Hoosiers a good game here, but I like trusting the gift that just keeps giving, and that’s production from Trayce Jackson-Davis. He’s been the driving force behind Indiana’s success this season, and I like leaning him in this big spot. Take Indiana’s spread for this Big Ten Semifinal.
