The Tarleton State Texans and the Utah Valley Wolverines will meet in Las Vegas to battle in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament at the Orleans Arena on ESPN+.
Tarleton State moved to 17-15 after beating Rio Grande Valley in the first round. The Texans went back-and-forth with the Vaqueros before advancing with a four-point win, 74-70. Tarleton scores 72.4 points per game, while allowing 67.6 ppg, and shooting 45.4% from the field.
Tarleton State showed up in round one, but they’ll have to rev things up if they want to take down UVU. Sophomore swingman Freddy Hicks scored 23 points in the season finale, and he finished as Tarleton’s leading scorer (15.7) and rebounder (5.6). Junior forward Jakorie Smith went for a season-high 26 points in the first round win over UTRGV, and he’s up to 9.6 ppg.
Utah Valley improved to 24-7 following a home win over Stephen F. Austin. The Wolverines roughed up SFA in this one to pick up a massive victory in their home finale, 113-69. Utah Valley is scoring 76.7 points per game, while allowing 67.6 ppg, and shooting 45.9% from the floor.
Utah Valley may have sent a message to the conference with the thumping of SFA, and they’ll look to become outright champions of the WAC this week. Junior guard Le’Tre Darthard led the team with 26 points against the Lumberjacks, and he’s up to a team-lead 14.4 ppg. Senior guard Trey Woodbury impressively triple-doubled in the season finale, and he’s posting a nice line of 12.6 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 4.4 apg. Axis Bandaogo is one of the best rebounders in the conference, and he’s averaging 11.4 ppg and 10.5 rpg.
Tarleton is 13-13-1 against the spread this season, with a 12-14-1 over/under record. UVU is 20-8 ATS this year, with a 14-13-1 o/u record.
Utah Valley put together an impressive season in the WAC, and it won’t end prematurely here. The Wolverines are the far more superior team on both sides of the ball, and this conference tournament bout should come down to a matter of how much. UVU may just win this entire tournament, so take their spread for this matchup.
