The Richmond Spiders and the George Mason Patriots will meet in Brooklyn to battle in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Barclays Center on the USA Network. This will mark the 70th time these two Virginia schools face off, and Richmond leads the all-time series, 41-28, but GMU has won the last three meetings.
Richmond moved to 14-17 after beating UMass in the first round. The Spiders put a thumping on the Minuteman, and ended their season with a 33-point win, 71-38. Richmond is scoring 68.5 points per game, while allowing 66.9 ppg, and shooting 43.5% from the field.
Richmond flexed their muscles in the first round, and they’ll look to avoid a two-point loss to GMU in their home finale here. Senior forward Tyler Burton is the main source of production for UR, and after going off for a game-high 28 points in the win over UMass, he leads UR in scoring (18.6) and rebounding (7.5). Senior center Neal Quinn scored 15 points or more in three of the last six games, and after grabbing 10 boards against UMass, he’s up to 9.4 ppg and 4.4 rpg.
George Mason moved to 19-12 following a road win over Richmond. The Patriots jumped out to a sizable halftime lead, and held off a fierce rally from the Spiders to win by two, 62-60. GMU is scoring 69.4 points per game, while allowing 67.1 ppg, and shooting 45.5% from the floor.
George Mason closed the season by winning their last six games, and they’ve got a real chance to win this tournament. Josh Oduro leads the charge for Kim English’s team, and after posting a double-double in the win over Richmond, he leads GMU in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (8.0). Junior guard Ronald Polite III led the team with 22 points in the road win over Dayton, and he’s up to 11.3 ppg and 4.1 apg. Senior guard Davonte Gaines went for a season-high 23 points in the finale against UR, and he’s averaging 7.2 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
UR is 16-12 against the spread this season, with a 16-12 over/under record. GMU is 11-17-2 ATS this year, with a 15-15 o/u record.
It’s always close when these two Virginia schools cross paths. I went to the New Year’s Eve matchup in Fairfax, and watched GMU and Richmond trade blows in a possession-heavy, slow-paced game, and after an identical contest in the season finale, we could be in for more of the same. With Richmond playing their second game in two days, I like leaning on George Mason to capitalize on that. The Patriots have won their last six games, and I like them notching lucky never seven here. Take GMU’s spread, or even the ML for safety in this second round matchup.
Corey’s Pick GMU -2
