The Oklahoma Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will meet in Kansas City in the first round of the Big 12 Championship at the T-Mobile Arena on ESPNU. Oklahoma leads the Bedlam series, 88-74, but Oklahoma State has won six of the last seven matchups.
Oklahoma finished at 15-16 after beating TCU in Norman. The Sooners jumped out to a huge halftime lead, and held on to down the Horned Frogs by double figures, 74-60. Oklahoma is scoring 68.3 points per game, while allowing 67.9 ppg, and shooting 46.5% from the field.
Oklahoma has been very pesky in conference play this season, and they’ve by far been the best last placed team in college basketball this season. Veteran guard Grant Sheffield scored 20 points in the win over TCU, and he leads OU in scoring at 16.1 ppg. Senior big Tanner Groves went off for a season-high 23 points against the Horned Frogs, and he leads the Sooners in rebounding (7.0) while scoring 10.1 ppg. Senior forward Jalen Hill grabbed 11 boards in the season finale, and he’s averaging 9.8 ppg and 5.8 rpg.
Oklahoma State closed at 17-14 after defeating Texas Tech in Lubbock. The Cowboys brawled with the Red Raiders for forty minutes, and left Texas with a three-point win, 71-68. Oklahoma State is scoring 69.5 points per game, while allowing 66.8 ppg, and shooting 43.9% from the field.
Oklahoma State stopped the bleeding winning their season finale, and they’ll look to win their third Bedlam matchup of the season here in KC. Junior guard Bryce Thompson leads the team in scoring (11.9) after a 19-point performance against TTU. Senior guard Caleb Ashberry scored a season-high 24 points in the win over Texas Tech, and he’s up to 9.3 ppg. Kalib Boone (11.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Moussa Cisse (6.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg) start up front for the Cowboys.
Oklahoma is 14-16-1 against the spread this season, with a 16-14-1 over/under record. Oklahoma State is 15-16 ATS this year, with a 16-15 o/u record.
Oklahoma has been a thorn in the betting community’s side this season, but I think that comes to an end this Wednesday. The Sooners were able to capitalize on the Norman crowd throughout the season, but they won’t have the benefit of that this time around, and I like a rugged Oklahoma State team bottling them up again here. The Cowboys played Grant Sherfield well twice this season, and if they’re able to neutralize him again, they should win their third Bedlam matchup of the season. Beware of upset-happy Sooners here, but roll with Oklahoma State to win and advance in this first round matchup.
