The St. John’s Red Storm will head up to Milwaukee to face the Marquette Golden Eagles from the FiservForum. Marquette leads the all-time series, 25-16, after winning the last two meetings.
St. John’s fell to 17-13 after losing to UConn at MSG. The Red Storm could capitalize on the aura of the Mecca this time around, and they’d fall to the Huskies in a shootout by nine, 95-86. St. John’s scores 77.1 points per game, while allowing 75.0 ppg, and shooting 45.2% from the floor.
St. John’s failed to capitalize on their hot start, and they’ll look to avoid being swept by the Big East champs here. The Red Storm are 7-12 in Big East play, with a 3-7 record. Yonkers product Joel Soriano has been one of the top interior players in the country, and after double-doubling against UConn, he leads SJU in scoring (15.3) and rebounding (11.8). Former DePaul forward David Jones joins him up front and he’s second on the team at 13.0 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Junior guard Posh Alexander led the team with 18 points versus the Huskies, and he’s up to 10.0 and a team-lead 4.4 apg.
Marquette improved to 24-6 after defeating Butler in Indianapolis. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a fast start, and poured it out to beat the Bulldogs by sixteen, 72-56. Marquette is scoring 80.5 points per game, while allowing 70.6 ppg, and shooting 49.5% from the field.
Marquette clinched the regular season title with the strong effort at Butler, and they’ll now look close strong in their home finale. The Golden Eagles are 16-3 in conference play, with a 15-1 record at home. Sophomore guard Kam Jones scored 22 points in the win over DePaul led the team with 22 points in the win over DePaul the Jays to bring his team-lead to 15.0 ppg. Tyler Kolek has double-doubled in back-to-back games, and he’s one of the top dimers in the country at 7.9 apg, while scoring 12.6 ppg. Olivier-Maxence Prosper (12.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Oso Ighodaro (11.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg) start up front for the Golden Eagles.
St. John’s is 12-18 against the spread this season, with a 15-14-1 over/under record. Marquette is 19-10-1 ATS this year, with a 16-14 o/u record.
Marquette clinched their first Big East regular season championship of all-time, and Saturday afternoon should serve as a celebration. St. John’s has been hindered by inconsistent play all season, and with a trip to the big Dance out of reach, it’s unclear how they’ll show up in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles should be energized this weekend, but with the conference already clinched, there may be a relaxed approach to this contest. Take the under for this Big East matchup.
