The Fresno State Bulldogs will head over to Vegas to meet the UNLV Rebels in Mountain West play from the Thomas & Mack Center on FS1. This will mark the 50th time Fresno & UNLV face off, and the Runnin’ Rebels lead the all-time series, 33-16, but Fresno won the first meeting of the season on New Year’s Day.
Fresno State dropped to 7-14 after losing Wyoming in Laramie. The Bulldogs were blitzed by the Cowboys early, and eventually defeated by 23 points. Fresno is scoring 60.6 points per game, while allowing 64.3 ppg, and shooting 41.8% from the floor.
Fresno State has dropped three straight games for the second time in conference action and the writing is on the wall for their season. The Bulldogs are 3-7 in Mountain West play, with a 2-7 road record. napped a three-game skid with the win over UNLV, but they’ll have their hands full here. Offense has been very scarce for Fresno this season, but senior forward Isaih Moore leads the team in scoring (11.9) and rebounding (7.7). Senior Isaiah Hill dropped a career-best 28 points in the first meeting with UNLV, and he’s averaging 10.4 ppg and 3.7 apg.
UNLV improved to 15-7 after beating Colorado State on the road. The Runnin Rebels used a fast start to defeat the Rams by 12 points. UNLV is scoring 76.1 points per game, while allowing 68.1 ppg and shooting 44.7% from the field.
UNLV has picked up three straight wins, and they’ll need to keep things going if they want to qualify for the postseason. The Runnin’ Rebels are 4-6 in Mountain West play, with a 8-4 home record. Former OU guard Elijah Harkless went for a season-high 33 points in the first matchup with CSU, and after dropping 28 points in the win over Wyoming, he leads the Rebels in scoring (17.1). Ole Miss transfer Luis Rodriguez and sophomore guard Keshon Gilbert both average 12 ppg, and the former leads the team in boards at 5.8 rpg.
Fresno is 6-14 against the spread this season, with a 7-13 over/under record. UNLV is 12-9 ATS this year, with a 11-10 o/u record.
Revenge should be a dish best served for UNLV here after losing to Fresno State a few weeks ago. The Runnin’ Rebels have finally put together a positive stretch of play in conference action, and that momentum should carry over against a Fresno team headed in the wrong direction. The Bulldogs lean so heavily on their defense, and it just hasn’t been able to cover up their limitations offensively. UNLV carries the advantages of home court and momentum, and I like winning this game by a sizable margin. Roll with the Rebels here, and take UNLVms spread for this MWC contest.
