The Vanderbilt Commodores will head down to College Station to face the Texas A&M Aggies in SEC play from the Reed Arena on the SEC Network. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series, 10-6, after winning the last two meetings in Nashville.
Vanderbilt dropped to 10-10 after losing to Kentucky in Lexington. The Commodores nearly upset the Tigers at home, but they’d fall by three points after a strong effort. Vandy is scoring 72.2 points per game, while allowing 70.6 ppg, and shooting 42.6% from the floor.
Vanderbilt comes into this contest at 3-4 in SEC play, and it’s just hard to get excited about this team. To make matters worse, leading scorer and rebounder Liam Robbins is set to miss his fourth straight game, and his absence will make life difficult for the Commodores. Junior guard Tyrin Lawrence scored 22 points in the win over Arkansas, and he’s second on the team in scoring at 11.2 ppg. Senior swingman Jordan Wright has been steady, scoring 13 points or more in five of the last seven games, and averaging 10.6 for the year.
Texas A&M improved to 14-6 after beating Auburn on the road. The Aggies took it to the Tigers early, and cruised to a 16-point win. Texas A&M is scoring 74.8 points per game, while allowing 66.1 ppg, and shooting 45.3% from the floor.
Texas A&M has started SEC play on a very high note, and after handing Auburn their first home loss in a very long time, they may just be as real as they seem. Sophomore guard Wade Taylor IV leads the team in scoring (14.8) and assists (3.9) through 20 games. Senior guard Tyrece Raford went off for a season-high 30 points last time out in the win over Auburn, and he’s averaging 13.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg. Wichita transfer double-doubled in wins over Florida and Mizzou, and he’s up to 8.3 ppg and 5.7 rpg.
Vanderbilt is 9-11 against the spread this season, with a 11-9 over/under record. Texas A&M is 13-7 ATS this year, with a 11-9 o/u record.
Texas A&M’s success in the SEC this season is admirable, and after winning eight of nine games since Christmas Day, I have no issue trusting them to go out, execute and cover this weekend. Vandy is not the same without Scottie Pippen Jr., and they can be targeted from here on out. Take Texas A&M spread for this SEC clash, and if the double digit margin feels stiff, take the under as Vandy could get bottled up here on the road.
