The Iowa State Cyclones will cross the state line to face a familiar foe when they head down to Columbia to meet the Missouri Tigers in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on ESPN2. There’s a lot of history here, as Mizzou and Iowa State were former rivals in the Big 12, and faced off in one of college basketball's longest running series. Missouri holds the all-time series lead, 136-82, but ISU won last year’s meetings in Ames, 67-50.

Iowa State improved to 15-4 after beating Kansas State at home. The Cyclones and Wildcats traded leads throughout the contest, and ISU would pull away late with the four-point victory. Iowa State is scoring 71.1 points per game, while allowing 59.5 ppg and shooting 46.3% from the floor.

Iowa State has traded their last four games, but that is what comes with Big 12 basketball this season. This matchup may take the pressure from conference play off, and it’ll give them a chance to add another solid win to their growing resume. The Cyclones thrive on the defensive end, and they play as a collective unit offensively. Former SBU guard Jaren Holmes tied a season-high with 22 points last time out versus KState, and he leads ISU in scoring at 13.5 ppg. Fellow senior guard Gabe Kalscheur has picked things up since the start of Big 12 action, scoring 23 points in wins over Baylor and Kansas, and he’s up to 13.1 ppg.

Missouri jumped to 15-5 after beating Ole Miss in Oxford. The Tigers got a much-needed road win over the Rebels after controlling both halves, and leaving with a 12-point victory. Mizzou is scoring 83.4 points per game, while allowing 76.1 ppg, and shooting 48.1% from the floor.

Missouri’s been somewhat shaky over the past two weeks after a strong start, and they’ll need to channel that sharp form with a disciplined Iowa State team coming to town. Kobe Brown is enjoying a strong senior season, and through 20 games he leads Tigers in scoring (15.8), while grabbing 5.6 rpg. Former Cleveland State guard D’Moi Hodge scored a game-high 24 points against Ole Miss, and he’s now up to 14.5 ppg. Missouri State transfer Isiaih Mosley made his third appearance against the Rebels, and contributed 20 points.

Iowa State is 12-7 against the spread this season, with a 12-8 over/under record. Missouri is 11-9 ATS this year, with a 12-8 o/u record. ISU is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The Under is 13-3 in Mizzou’s last 16 vs. a team with a winning straight up record.

Iowa State has quickly built a reputation for winning big games this season, and it’s no secret why they are one of the few road favorites on tap this weekend. The Cyclones play a strong brand of basketball, that’s traveled well this year, and while they could serve as a turning point for the Tigers’ season, I like them adding another notable win to their resume. Mizzou’s recent stretch of play makes them a bit vulnerable, so I like Iowa State to win this Big 12/SEC matchup. Also, with the total sitting high due to Missouri’s ability to score, test ISU’s defensive unit with the under as well, as they only allow 59.5 ppg.
