The San Diego Toreros will head up to Malibu to meet the Pepperdine Waves in WCC play from the Firestone Fieldhouse. This will mark the 100th time San Diego and Pepperdine face off, and the Waves lead the all-time series, 56-43, but the Toreros did win the first meeting this season.
San Diego dropped to 9-12 after losing to Portland on the road. The Toreros and the Pilots traded leads throughout, but the host would prevail with a five-point victory. San Diego is scoring 78.1 points per game, while allowing 78.7 ppg, and shooting 44.8% from the floor.
Each of San Diego’s last three wins have been followed by a pair of losses, and just haven’t been able to win games consistently this season. The Toreros have been able to score this season, but have not been able to defend, giving up 83 points or more in eight of the last ten games. Marcellus Earlington (15.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg) leads USF in scoring after going for a season-high 32 points last time out versus Portland. Jase Townsend scored 25 points in the first meeting with Pepperdine, and he’s averaging 15.4 ppg. Oregon transfer Eric Williams fell one assist short of a triple-double against the Waves a few weeks ago, and he leadS USD in rebounding (9.8), while scoring 14.8 ppg.
Pepperdine dropped to 7-14 after losing to Portland in Oregon. The Waves were blitzed by the Pilots in the first half, and ended up going home with a 15-point loss. Pepperdine is scoring 77.2 points per game, while allowing 79.1 ppg, and shooting 46.7% from the field.
Pepperdine is sinking in conference play, and at 0-7, they just want to stop the bleeding at this point. Six of the Waves eight straight losses have been by double figures, and every opposing team has scored at will. Maxwell Lewis posted a 30-point double-double against Pacific, and he leads Pepperdine in scoring (18.8), while grabbing 5.8 rpg. Jevon Porter also had a solid outing versus the Pilots, and he leads the team in rebounding (6.9), and scores 11.4 ppg. Sophomore guard Houston Mallette has scored 15 points or more in four of the last six games, and he’s second on the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg.
San Diego is 6-13 against the spread this season, with a 15-4 over/under record. Pepperdine is 6-13 ATS this year, with a 13-6 o/u record.
These two schools will face off for the second time in two weeks, and they’re both struggling to stay afloat in the West Coast Conference. Pepperdine being winless in conference play yet coming into this one as four-point favorites shows that if there’s any game to win, it’s this one. In return, I’ll roll with the gunners of San Diego here, and spot them the points. Neither schools attempts to defend, so the absurd over here is actually a possibility here as well.
