The Longwood Lancers will head down US-460 and face the Radford Highlanders in Big South play from the Dedmon Center on ESPNU. This southern Virginia series dates back to 1977, and Radford leads the all-time series, 27-9, Longwood did win both meetings last season though.
Longwood improved to 15-6 following a road win over Presbyterian. The Lancers held off a late rally from the Blue Hose and escaped with a two-point victory. LU scoring 75.5 points per game, while allowing 66.1 ppg, and shooting 46% from the floor
Longwood has won nine of their last ten games, and they currently sit atop the Big South. It’s been a collective effort for the Lancers this season, with solid guard play leading the way. Isaiah Wilkins double-doubled against UNC Asheville and SC Upstate, and he leads the Lancers in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (5.8). Fourth-year starter Deshaun Wade scored 19 points in the win over Upstate, and he’s up to 10.3 ppg.
Radford moved to 12-9 after beating High Point at home. The Highlanders jumped out to a big halftime lead, and cruised to defeat the Panthers by 15 points. RU is scoring 72.2 points per game, while allowing 64.9 ppg, and shooting 47.9% from the field.
Radford has won their last five games, and they have a chance to jump the Lancers in the conference standings with a win here. The Highlanders also play a collective brand of basketball, and they’re led by a handful of newcomers. Former Murray State guard Daquan Smith went for a game-high 22 points in the win over HPU, and he leads RU in scoring (13.3). Sophomore forward Justin Archer has double-doubled in back-to-back games, and he leads RU in rebounding (6.9), while scoring 7.9 ppg.

It’s a shame southern Virginia lacks creativity and hasn’t billed this rivalry up. Longwood and Radford have been solid fixtures in the Big South over the years, and they both have a good shot at raising another conference crown this season. I wish this was a home underdog spot, but I like rolling with the hosts in these types of matchups. Radford was swept by Longwood last season, so revenge may be on their minds coming into this one.
