The Wofford Terriers will travel to Tennessee to take on the Chattanooga Mocs in Southern Conference play from the McKenzie Arena on ESPN+. Chattanooga leads the all-time series, 28-19, after winning five of the last six meetings.
Wofford dropped to 11-10 after losing to Furman in Spartanburg. The Terriers failed to stick with the Paladins in the second half, and lost by 14 points. Wofford is scoring 74.1 points per game, while allowing 69.1 ppg, and shooting 46.9% from the field.
Wofford is off to a 3-5 start in SoCon play, and they’ll face a pair of uphill battles with Chattanooga and Samford this week. The Terriers run through big man B.J. Mack again this season. The 6’8 senior scored 20 points against Furman last time out, and he leads the Terriers in scoring (15.6), while grabbing 4.& rpg. Jackson Paveletzke went off for a season-high 25 points against the Paladins, and he’s now up to 14.1 ppg, while leading the team in assists (3.7).
Chattanooga fell to 11-10 after losing to East Tennessee State at home. The Mocs completely fell apart in the second half, and loss to the Buccaneers, 78-62. Chattanooga is scoring 78.1 points per game, while allowing 70.3 ppg, and shooting 45.7% from the floor.
Chattanooga has dropped their last three games, and with a three-game road trip looming, this home matchup with Wofford is huge. VMI transfer Jake Stephens has come in and made an immediate impact for Chattanooga. The 7’ center went off for 37 points in the win over his former school, and he followed it up with a 35-point double-double against Western Carolina. Stephens leads the Southern Conference in scoring (21.8) and rebounding (10.2). Auburn transfer Jamal Johnson (13.2 ppg) should get up for this game, and he’s reached double figures in each of the last four games.
Wofford is 10-8 against the spread this season, with a 12-6 over/under record. Chattanooga is 7-10-1 ATS this year, with a 10-8 o/u record.
Both schools need this game, but Chattanooga needs to stop the bleeding even more here at home. The Mocs had high aspirations after a strong non-conference slate, but they’ve fallen behind with this three game-skid. Dropping a fourth straight contest, and a third straight home loss would send the Mocs into even more of a free fall before this road trip, so there will be a sense of urgency from them to get back into the win column.
