The South Carolina Gamecocks will head down to Gainesville and face the Florida Gators in SEC play from the O’Connell Center on ESPN2. Florida and SC have faced off 75 times, and the Gators hold the all-time series lead, 47-28.
South Carolina fell to 8-11 after losing to Auburn in Columbia. The Gamecocks failed to overcome a big halftime deficit, and loss to the Tigers by 15 points. South Carolina is scoring 63.8 points per game, while allowing 72.6 ppg, and shooting 39.6% from the field.
South Carolina has dropped their last three games, and at 1-5 in SEC play, the writing is pretty much on the wall for their season. The Gamecocks have struggled to surround true freshman Gregory Jackson with consistent production. The 6’9 forward went off for a season-high 30 points in the loss to Auburn, and he leads SC in scoring (15.9) and rebounding (6.7). OSU transfer Meechie Johnson scored 26 points in the lone conference win over UK, and he’s averaging 12.4 ppg.
Florida moved to 11-8 after defeating Mississippi State in Starkville. The Gators held on to a nine-point halftime lead, and beat the Bulldogs, 61-59. Florida is scoring 72.3 points per game, while allowing 65.3 ppg, and shooting 43.9% from the floor.
Florida has won four of their last five conference games, and they’ve played themselves back into the top half of the SEC. Collin Castleton leads the charge for a third season in a row for UF. The 6’11 big posted double-doubles in wins over Mizzou and Texas A&M, and he leads the Gators in scoring (14.8) and rebounding (7.8). Consistent production beyond Castleton has been hard to find, but Belmont transfer Will Richard led the team with 18 points against the Tigers, and he’s up to 10.2 ppg,
South Carolina is 9-10 against the spread this season, with a 8-11 over/under record. Florida is 10-9 ATS this year, with a 6-13 o/u record.
Florida is trending in the right direction, and while they should win their fourth straight game here, are they worthy of beating a fellow SEC team by 17 points? It remains to be seen, and while it could happen, I like the targeting the total here a lot more. The Gators have been able to lean on their defensive prowess, and if they minimize Gregory Jackson’s effect on the game, we could see a one-sided, low scoring game. Take the under for this SEC matchup.
