The Chicago State Cougars will travel to Palo Alto and face the Stanford Cardinal in non-conference play from the Maples Pavilion on the Pac-12 Network. This will mark the first time these two programs face off.
Chicago State moved to 5-16 after beating Coastal Carolina in Conway. The Cougars managed to lead at the break, and they held on to defeat the Chanticleers by four points. Chicago State is scoring 67.1 points per game, while allowing 73.7 ppg, shooting 41.4% from the field.
Chicago State comes into the palm trees on the heels of their best win of the season, but that glory may be short-lived. The Cougars haven’t won many games this season, but they’ve been able to capitalize as underdogs this season over a handful of times. CSU is led by a pair of sophomore guards in Wesley Cardet Jr. and Jahsean Corbett. Cardet Jr, a Samford transfer, scored a team-high 21 points in the win over Coastal, and he leads the Cougs with 16.1 ppg. Corbett has grabbed double digit rebounds in five of the last seven games, and he’s averaging 13.1 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Dayton transfer Elijah Weaver brings over 120 games of experience to the lineup, and he’s posting personal-best of 11.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg.
Stanford improved to 7-12 after beating Oregon in Palo Alto. The Cardinal held the Ducks to 38% shooting and came away with the seven-point victory. Stanford scores 67.9 points per game, while allowing 66.2 ppg and shooting 43.6% from the field.
Stanford has a good chance to win three games in a row for the first time this season. After facing Chicago State, the Cardinal get Cal at home, so this could be another good week for the program. Four-year starter Spencer Jones leads the team in scoring at 12.9 ppg after going for 18 points in the win over Oregon State. Davidson transfer Michael Jones matched his 18 points, and he’s second on the team at 10.1 ppg. Sophomore forward Harrison Ingram leads the team in rebounding (5.2) and assists (3.3), while scoring 9.3 ppg.
Chicago State is 12-8 against the spread this season, with a 7-12-1 over/under record. Stanford is 10-7 ATS this year, with a 9-10 o/u record.
Stanford’s recent stretch of play has seemingly rose the margin for this one, and it’s a bit stiff. Chicago State has been good at utilizing the underdog spread this season, and this feels like another one of those opportunities. It’s hard to ignore Stanford’s momentum coming into this one though, and I like leaning on their defensive prowess for the under in this non-conference matchup.
