The New Mexico Lobos will head to Reno and face the Nevada Wolfpack in Mountain West Conference play from Lawlor Events Center on CBSSN. Nevada has won the last seven meetings by seven points or more.
New Mexico improved to 18-2 after defeating Boise State at home. The Lobos outlasted the Broncos by two points in overtime. New Mexico scores 81.9 points per game, while allowing 68.5 ppg, and shooting 48.6% from the field.
New Mexico responded to their first pair of losses with four straight victories, including a strong road win over SDSU. The Lobos sit at 5-2 in MWC play, and they’re in position to return to the Big Dance this March. The backcourt pairing of Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jaelen House form one of the best duos in the country. Mashburn has scored a game-high 25 points in the win over Boise, and he leads the Lobos in scoring (18.6). House dropped 29 points in the against SDSU, and the veteran point guard is scoring 17.4 ppg and dishing out a team-lead 4.6 apg. Transfer forwards Morris Udeze (15.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Josiah Allick (8.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg) start up front for UNM.
Nevada dropped to 15-5 following a road loss to Boise State. The Wolf Pack were out scored by the Broncos in both halves en route to a 15-point loss. Nevada is scoring 73.2 points per game, while allowing 63.8 ppg, and shooting 43.9% from the floor.
Nevada is off to a 5-2 start in MWC play, and they’ll likely remain in the conference title picture. Senior guard Jarod Lucas gets things going for Nevada. The Oregon State transfer scored 21 points in the win over Utah State and he leads Nevada in scoring at 16.8 ppg. Fellow veteran guard Kenan Blackshear went for a game-high 28 points against the Aggies, and he’s posting a healthy line of 14.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 4.6 apg. Senior center Will Baker scored 24 points versus USU, and he’s scoring 12.9 ppg and grabbing 4.7 rpg.
New Mexico is 11-7-1 against the spread this season, with a 10-8 over/under record. Nevada is 12-5-2 ATS this year, with a 12-7 o/u record.
The Mountain West is kind of stacked this season, with five teams sitting at 5-2, each waiting for first placed San Diego State to slip up. Nevada’s recent dominance over New Mexico could serve as motivation for this one. Jamal Mashburn Jr. and Jaelen House are guiding the Lobos to one of the best seasons in school history, and I love taking a shot on them as underdogs here. Roll with New Mexico for this MWC matchup.
