The Temple Owls will head to Texas to take on the Houston Cougars in AAC play from the Fertitta Center on ESPN. Houston and Temple have faced off 15 times, with the Cougars holding a series of, 12-3.
Temple moved to 11-9 after beating East Carolina in Philly. The Owls trailed ECU at the break, but a strong second half would lead them to a 15-point victory. Temple is scoring 69.3 points per game, while allowing 68.3 ppg, and shooting 42.2% from the floor.
Temple has traded their last five games, and there’s a high chance that trend carries on here too. The Owls style of play clash with the Houston defense negatively, and they could be in for a long night. Aaron McKie’s team is led by the tandem Khalif Battle and Damian Dunn. Battle responded to a poor showing versus Memphis with 20 points against the Pirates to bring his scoring total to a team-leading 17.2 ppg. Dunn led the team with 22 points for the second straight game, and he’s up to 15.2 ppg.
Houston improved to 18-1 after beating Tulane in New Orleans. The Cougars put together another strong effort on both sides of the ball, and defeated the Green Wave by 20 points. Houston is scoring 76.2 points per game, while allowing 53.3 ppg, and shooting 47.1% from the field.
Houston looks like a championship contender once again, and and they’ll look to win their tenth straight game this Sunday evening. Seven of those wins were by double figures, and they’re going to give Temple trouble here. Marcus Sasser followed his 31-point performance against USF with 23 points in the win over Tulane, bringing his team-lead to 16.9 ppg. Defensive stud Tramon Mark (10.3 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and veteran guard Jamal Shead (8.5 ppg, 5.2 apg) join him in the backcourt. J’Wan Roberts has double-doubled in the win over Cinci, and he leads the Cougs in rebounding (7.1), while scoring 9.8 ppg.
Temple is 12-7-1 against the spread this season, with a 8-11-1 over/under record. Houston is 13-6 ATS this year, with a 8-11 o/u record.
Houston is rolling into the final third of the season, and it’s unlikely Temple is the team to slow this train down. Now while this should be a one-sided contest, the margin feels hefty, and the total feels manageable, even if the Cougars have to do most of the dirty work. Each do their last five games have hit this number, so let’s roll with the over for this AAC matchup.
