The Davidson Wildcats will head up to Ohio to face the Dayton Flyers in Atlantic 10 action from the UD Arena on the CBSSN. Dayton leads the all-time series, 8-2, after winning six meetings in a row, including a New Year’s Eve bash in Charlotte a few weeks ago.
Davidson dropped to 9-9 after losing to George Mason in Fairfax. The Wildcats led at the break, but a strong second half from the Patriots would put them over the top. Davidson is scoring 70.9 points per game, while allowing 69.5 ppg, and shooting 44.9% from the field.
Davidson was just given a three-piece by the state of Virginia, and they’ll look to reverse their fortunes in a rematch with Dayton here. After starting the season 5-1, the Wildcats haven’t been the annual mid-major we’re accustomed to seeing since Thanksgiving. Foster Loyer and Sam Mennenga do most of the damage for Davidson. Loyer, a 6” guard, has three 30-point games this season, and he leads the Wildcats in scoring (16.1) and assists (4.7). Mennenga, a 6”9 forward, double-doubled against Richmond, and he’s grabbing a team-lead 7.2 rpg, while scoring 15.5 ppg.
Dayton fell to 12-6 after losing to VCU at home. The Flyers hounded the Rams to 19 first half points early, but an unseen outburst from my alma mater would push them to a one-point victory. Dayton is scoring 68.2 points per game, while allowing 58.6 ppg, and shooting 47.1% from the floor.
Dayton had their seven-game win streak snapped by a point, but they come into a nice spot to avenge the defeat. The Flyers sent Davidson into the new year with 14-point loss, and they have a shot of replicating that performance here at home. Daron Holmes leads the charge for Dayton. The sophomore big was held to a season-low 13 points versus VCU, and you can bet he bounces back here. Holmes went for a season-high 32 points in the first win over the Wildcats, and he leads the Flyers in scoring (19.4), while grabbing 8.2 rpg. Toumani Camara is one of the best defenders in the country, and after going for a season-high 27 points last time out, he’s up to career-highs of 12.4 ppg and 9.3 rpg.
Davidson is 8-9 against the spread this season, with a 7-10 over/under record. Dayton is 9-9 ATS this year, with a 6-12 o/u record.
Davidson might just get bullied again by Dayton here in a game that could end up looking like their NYE meeting. The Flyers might not be in the best of moods after having their winning streak snapped by VCU, and the Wildcats might end up catching the wrath of that outcome. Dayton’s physical, grind-it-out, style of play should bode well again here, so take their spread for this Atlantic 10 contest. Never shy away from the under on a Dayton game as well.
