The Virginia Tech Hokies will head to Upstate New York and face the Syracuse Orange in ACC play from The Dome on the ACC Network. These two schools were brief Big East rivals, and Syracuse leads the all-time series 11-6.
Virginia Tech dropped to 11-5 after losing to N.C. State at home. The Hokies fell behind big in the first half, and the Wolfpack would hold off a fierce rally to pick up the road underdog victory. Virginia Tech scores 77.1 points per game, while shooting 47.6% from the floor, and 35.8% from three.
Virginia Tech has watched their 11-1 start disappear and dropped their last four conference games. The defending outright ACC champions need to stop the bleeding before aspirations of repeating are out of the window The Hokies have a well put together starting lineup, led by Sean Pedulla. The sophomore guard is enjoying a nice second-year leap, and he’s leading VT in scoring (17.3) and assists (4.3). Justyn Mutts (13.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Grant Basile (13.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg), each give Tech nice production in the frontcourt, while folk hero Hunter Cattoor joins Pedulla in the backcourt.
Syracuse dropped to 10-6 after losing to Virginia in Charlottesville. The Orange were hindered by a slow start, and ended up losing to the Cavaliers by seven points. Syracuse is scoring 75.2 points per game, while allowing 69.1 ppg, and shooting 46.1% from the field.
Syracuse responded to a late November three-game skid by winning seven of their last nine games. Joe Girard III is thriving in the captain role this season, and after saving the day with a season-high 28 points in the win over Louisville, he leads the Orange in scoring at 16.8 ppg. Judah Mintz (15.9 ppg, 4.1 apg) has been sharp alongside him in the backcourt, double-doubling in the win over former Big East rival Georgetown and scoring 24 in the ACC opener versus Pitt. Jesse Edwards sets a tone in the paint, and he’s one of the top rebounders in the country at 10.9 rpg, while scoring 13.3 ppg.
Virginia Tech is 6-10 against the spread this season, with a 7-8-1 over/under record. Syracuse is 8-8 ATS this year, with a 9-7 o/u record.
Syracuse will look to get some revenge on the state of VA for Saturday night’s loss in the mountains of Charlottesville. Despite the final result, Syracuse has cleaned things up since a 3-4 start, and Virginia Tech’s alarming start to conference play shouldn’t be overlooked here. The Hokies aren’t the same team from last season, and they’ve gone cold since the start of conference play. Virginia Tech is due for one, and they should enter New York with some fight, which makes the over a play here. This magic number has been hit in eight of Syracuse’s last nine games, and I’m going to give it a swing here.
