The Richmond Spiders will head down to Carolina to take on the Davidson Wildcats in Atlantic 10 play from the Belk Arena on ESPN. Davidson leads the all-time series 9-8, but Richmond has won four of the last five matchups, including a win in the Atlantic 10 championship last season.
Richmond moved to 9-7 after defeating Duquesne at home. The Spiders trailed by 15 points at the break, but they marched all the way back in the second half to hand the Dukes a 75-73 defeat. Richmond is scoring 70.1 points per game, while allowing 65.1 ppg, and shooting 44.5% from the field.
Richmond has won four of their last five games, but they enter Carolina with a small monkey on their back. The Spiders have struggled on the road this season and gone 1-5 as visitors, and that will need to change if they want to repeat at A-10 champs. Trey Burton has taken the reins this season for Richmond. The senior forward has evolved into a walking bucket, scoring 20 points or more in each of the past six games, and leading UR in scoring (19.8) and rebounding (7.8).
Davidson dropped to 9-7 after losing to VCU in Richmond. The Wildcats fell victim to the Siegel Center crowd early, and were outscored in both halves by the Rams en route to a 17-point defeat. Davidson is scoring 72.1 points per game, while allowing 70.2 ppg, and shooting 45.5% from the floor.
Davidson has taken a step back this season. After starting the season 5-1, the Wildcats haven’t been the annual mid-major we’re accustomed to since Thanksgiving. Foster Loyer and Sam Mennenga do most of the damage for Davidson. Loyer, a 6” guard, has three 30-point games this season, and he leads the Wildcats in scoring (16.6) and assists (4.9). Mennenga, a 6”9 forward, double-doubled in the win over Fordham, and he’s grabbing a team-lead 6.8 rpg, while scoring 15.9 ppg.
Richmond is 8-7-1 against the spread this season, with a 8-8 over/under record. Davidson is 7-8 ATS this year, with a 7-8 o/u record.
Davidson needs a win, and they may want to secure it now with a three-game road trip looming. The Wildcats simply have to shoot better, and if they do, they can get back on track here. If they’re also able to neutralize Tyler Burton on their home floor, they’ve got a really good shot of overwhelming Richmond. Someone has to nab a tenth win here, and I’m going to sway with the host. Take Davidson spread for this Atlantic 10 matchup.
