The Indiana Hoosiers will travel and take on the Penn State Nittany Lions from the Jordan Center on the Big Ten Network. Penn State and Indiana have met 55 times, and the Hoosiers lead the all-time series, 42-13.
Indiana dropped to 10-5 after losing to Northwestern at home. The Hoosiers trailed at the break, and fell just one point short, 84-83. Indiana is scoring 80.9 points per game, while allowing 68.3 ppg, and shooting 51% from the floor.
Indiana has stumbled out to a 1-3 start in Big Ten play, but if last season taught us anything, it’s be patient with Mike Woodson’s team. The Hoosiers last two losses have come by three points combined, so they are due to be on the other side soon. Longtime Hoosier Trayce Jackson-Davis continues to be a game-changing presence for IU, and he grabbed a career-high 24 boards versus Northwestern last time out. TJD even triple-doubled against Nebraska, and he leads IU in scoring (17.7) and rebounding (9.6) for the third season in a row. Jalen Hood-Schifino (13.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.6 apg) dropped a career-high 33 points in the loss to the Wildcats.
Penn State dropped to 11-5 after losing to Purdue at home. The Nittany Lions failed to maintain a six-point halftime lead, and fell to the Boilermakers, 76-63. Penn State is scoring 74.8 points per game, while allowing 67.4 ppg, and shooting 46.1% from the field.
Penn State will look to avoid a three-game skid after losses to Michigan and Purdue. The Nittany Lions are led by the veteran trio of Jalen Pickett, Seth Lundy, and Andrew Funk. Pickett, a 6’4 guard, has gone for three straight 26-point performances against Iowa, Michigan, and Purdue, and he’s posting an impressive line of 17.9 ppg, 7.6 rpg, and 7.3 apg. Lundy, a three-year starter, recorded a 23-point double-double versus Clemson, and he’s posting career-highs in scoring (13.7) and rebounding (6.6). Funk, a Bucknell transfer, scored 20 points in both wins over Illinois and Iowa, and he’s scoring 11.6 ppg.
Indiana is 6-8-1 against the spread this season, with a 9-7 over/under record. Penn State is 7-8-1 ATS this year, with a 9-5 o/u record.
This feels like a game Indiana can steal, but it’s hard to judge their luck. Yes, they’ve been on the wrong side of a handful of defeats, but they haven’t defended well at all honestly. Penn State ran into the big boys of Michigan (Dickinson) and Purdue (Edey), and their lack of size was exploited. Jackson-Davis has a chance to do the same, I think we’ll see points from both sides here as they look to avoid a third straight conference loss. Take the over for this Big Ten matchup.
