The Nevada Wolf Pack will travel and take on the San Diego Aztecs in Mountain West play from the Viejas Arena on CBSSN. SDSU and Nevada have faced off 25 times, and the Aztecs hold the all-time series lead 19-6.
Nevada improved to 14-3 after beating San Jose State in Silicon Valley. The Wolf Pack pulled out their best defensive victory of the season. Nevada is scoring 73.2 points per game, while allowing 63.8 ppg, and shooting 43.9% from the floor.
Senior guard Jarod Lucas has settled in nicely in Reno. The Oregon State transfer has been a model for consistency early on, and after going for a season-high 28 points in the win over Air Force, he leads Nevada in scoring at 17.1 ppg. Fellow senior guard Kenan Blackshear scored 20 points in the win over Boise Boise, including the go-ahead bucket to put the Wolf Pack over the top, and he’s posting a healthy line of 14.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg, and 4.8!apg. Senior center Will Baker scored 23 points in the win over Norfolk State before the break, and he’s scoring 12.6 ppg and grabbing 4.9 rpg.
San Diego State improved to 11-3 after beating UNLV on the road. The Aztecs faced a stiff task in Vegas, but after establishing a lead early, they’d hold on to defeat the Rebels by eight points. SDSU is scoring 75.5 points per game, while allowing 65.5 ppg, and shooting 45.9% from the floor.
SDSU looks very strong again defensively this season. The Aztecs have held five of their last six opponents below the 60-point mark, and they should be threats in the MWC again this season. Seattle transfer Darrion Trammell leads the team in scoring and assists after the first third of the season at 2.6 ppg and 3.8 apg. Veteran guard Matt Bradley caught fire versus Air Force, going for a season-high 27 points to bring his season average to 12.2 ppg.
Nevada is 11-4-1 against the spread this season, with a 9-7 over/under record. SDSU is 4-9-1 ATS this year, with a 9-5 o/u record.
Nevada comes into America’s Finest City streaking, and while they could give San Diego State a run for their money, the Aztecs have been scorching themselves. Both schools have good chances of representing the conference in the Big Dance, but for this contest I like a strong defensive effort from the host. Nevada has been able to clamp up pretty well themselves, so there are elements for the under here. Test it for this Mountain West matchup.
