The McNeese State Cowboys will head up to Waco to face the Baylor Bears this Wednesday from the Ferrell Center on ESPN+. Baylor defeated McNeese State in their only meeting back in 2014, 80-39.
McNeese State improved to 2-3 after a win over longtime foe Lamar. The Cowboys pulled away from their former conference rivals in the second half to snap an early three-game skid, covering the eight-point spread on the head. McNeese is scoring 72.5 points per game, while shooting 43.8% from the field, and 32.8% from three.
Christian Shumate makes the biggest impact for the Cowboys. The 6’7 forward is averaging a double-double and leading McNeese State in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (10.6). Trae English hit five threes in the win over Lamar, and he’s now second on the team at 10.6 ppg.
Baylor improved 4-1 after a win over UCLA in Vegas last Sunday. The Bears were upended by an emotional UVA team Friday night, and they got back into the win column in a battle of Top-10 teams that went down to the wire. Baylor is scoring 91.6 points per game, while shooting 49.5% from the floor, and 32.8% from deep.
LJ Cryer and Adam Flagler lead the charge again this season for Baylor. Cryer went off for a timely game-high 28 points in the win over UCLA, and he averaging 18 ppg through the first five games. Flagler scored 22 points against the Bruins, and he’s been sharp in the lead guard role, posting a nice line of 17.8 ppg, 6.8 apg, and 2.6 rpg. Freshman guard Keyonte George recorded a pair of 20-point performances against Commonwealth schools Virginia and Norfolk State, and he’s third on the team in scoring (14.4).
McNeese State is 1-2 against the spread this season, with a 1-2 over/under record. Baylor is 3-2 ATS this year, with a 5-0 o/u record.
Baylor bounced back nicely versus UCLA, and adding a Top-10 win to their resume actually turned out to be a nice consolation prize. The Bears will look to remain sharp here with a trip to the midwest to meet Marquette and Gonzaga, and they likely will. McNeese State will represent a nice tone down from what Baylor had to deal with in Vegas, and I think they seize the moment and blow them out at home. Take Baylor’s lofty spread Wednesday afternoon in what should be a one-sided affair.
