The Vermont Catamounts will head to New Haven and take on the Yale Bulldogs this Tuesday evening from the Lee Amphitheater this Tuesday. Yale and Vermont have faced off in non-conference action in every season since 2007. Vermont has won four of the last five meetings, including taking home an eight-point win last Fall.
Vermont dropped to 1-4 after a loss to Iona at home Friday night. The Catamounts were nearly out-scored by the Iona backcourt pairing of Berrick JeanLois and Daniss Jenkins themselves (43 points) and dropped their fourth straight contest, 71-50. Vermont is scoring 75.8 points per game, while shooting 45.9% from the field, and 34.5% from deep.
Dylan Penn has found life to be a bit tough here early in Burlington. Outside of a 27-point showing in the loss to Cal-State Fullerton, the Bellarmine transfer has struggled to replicate last season’s form. Penn (13.8) and senior point guard Aaron Deloney (11.4) are the only Catamounts in double figures after having multiple threats last season.
Yale is 4-0 after defeating Hawaii in Honolulu. The Bulldogs used overtime to pull away in a back-and-forth affair with the Warriors to win their fourth straight game by a score of 62-59. Yale is scoring 78.1 points per game, while shooting 48% from the field, and 33.3% from three.
Yale has got their ‘guy’ in Matthew Knowling. The junior forward is thriving within the bigger role, hitting eight field goals or more in each of the first four games, and leading Yale with 21 ppg. He’s joined up front by senior big Isaiah Kelly, who’s reached double figures in each of the past three games, and leads Yale with 5.3 rpg. Second-year guard John Poulakidas leads the backcourt with 10.5 ppg.
Vermont is 2-3 against the spread this season, with a 3-2 over/under record. Yale is 2-1 ATS this year, with a 1-2 o/u record.
Vermont has been a victim of scheduling, but they do have a decent shot here and match up with Yale very well. The Catamounts may not have a surefire answer for Matthew Knowling, but if they find a way to slow him down, they can hand the Bulldogs their first blemish. Spot Vermont the points here for safety.
