The Texas Southern Tigers will travel up to Lubbock and take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders from United Sprint Arena. TTU and TSU met once back in 2013, with the Red Raiders coming away with a 80-71 victory.
Texas Southern opened the season with a road loss to San Francisco. TSU went into the locker room down 15 points, and although they failed to come back and win, they did rally and outscore USF in the second half to cover the 15-point spread. Johnny Jones’ team shot just 38% from the field, and 63.6% from the line.
P.J. Henry looks set to take on a bigger role this season after pacing the Tigers with 21 points in the opener. Fifth-year senior John Walker III scored 17 points, but he can’t be a non-factor on the glass for TSU at 6’9. Freshman Davon Barnes has a decent debut with 14 points, while veteran Joirdon Karl Nicholas added nine points and three rebounds.
Texas Tech opened their season with a thumping win over Northwestern State. TTU pulled off a vintage victory Monday night, stifling the Demons, harassing them into just 28.4% shooting. Mark Adams’ team shot 52.2% in the opener, and converted a strong 81.8% of their free throws.
Daniel Batcho’s about to have a big year for Texas Tech. The 6’11 frenchman double-doubled in the season opener, and he’s got real pro potential. Fifth-year senior Kevin Obanor joins him up front, and he’s averaged double figures in all four years of his career. Transfer portal signees Jaylon Tyson (Texas), De’Vion Harmon (Oregon), and Kerwin Walton (UNC) all played over 20 minutes and found ways to contribute in their debut. True freshman Pop Isaacs got the first crack at starting point guard.
TSU went 17-14-1 against the spread last season, with a 14-18 over/under record. TTU went 22-15 ATS last year, with a 18-19 o/u record. The Under is 4-1 in Texas Tech's last 5 home games. Texas Tech is 20-8 ATS in their last 28 home games
It’s early, but it looks like Lubbock is in for another year of strong college basketball. The Red Raiders looked good in the opener, and they may have a star in Daniel Batcho.
Texas Tech has lacked a player of such since Jarred Culver, and Batcho’s size allows him to have even more of an effect on the defensive end. Texas Southern might get outmuscled here, and they will surely have a tough time scoring. With a trip to Omaha and a bout with Creighton eleven days away, expect the Red Raiders to keep things going and come out strong here.
Look for the usual Texas Tech blueprint here, and take the under. The Red Raiders may even bully their way into covering the 20-point margin as well.
